Behringer TD-3 Teardown

Introduction:

The Behringer TD-3 is a low cost clone of the Roland TB-303. Additionally it has MIDI ports, a built-in distortion effect, extra control signal jacks, and USB connection.

The PCB layout is mostly surface-mounted components so the unit is quite light. A modern ARM processor handles all the housekeeping and can accept firmware updates using the USB connection.

Opening Up

The bottom cover is held in place by 8 screws. Once removed the cover comes off easily. There are no nasty plastic retaining clips to hinder the removal.

Once removed, the bottom side of the single PCB is visible.
There are five trimmer pots on the PCB. Two of these are the multi-turn type (blue), and three are the single-turn type.
The three single-turn pots are mounted on the other side of the PCB but access to them from this side is available by holes in the PCB.

Before removing the PCB from the plastic housing the knobs need to be removed first.
These were quite tight fitting so a hairdryer was used to warm them up first.
